Bradshaw, Homer L. and Richard Kahoe. “Differential Effects of Fraternity and Sorority Membership upon Academically Promising Students .” The Journal of Educational Research 61.2 (1967): 62-64.
In their research article “Differential Effects of Fraternity and Sorority Membership upon Academically Promising Students” (1967), Homer L. Bradshaw and Richard Kahoe look to prove whether fraternity and sorority membership has negative affects on the grade point average of students admitted to academic honor societies after their first semester of college. By first citing other similar studies done by other researchers at other colleges, and then by presenting the statistics of their own study, the pair discusses how time and place of studies produces inconsistent findings about whether belonging to a Greek organization affects GPA and why this inconsistency may occur. The authors’ purpose is most likely to discover the universal trends of academic success in Greek organizations and uncover why exactly these trends occur, thereby determining whether Greek organizations are helpful, neutral or detrimental to the academic success of promising students. The audience is an educated bunch knowledgeable in statistics and social discovery and interested in Greek organizations and their influence on students and society.

In their research article Sorority Status and Personality Adjustment” (1951), Carol Stone Larson looks to understand the positive or negative affects Greek life has on adjustment to college as compared to non-Greek individuals . By administering a test to 864 students, researchers were able to determine the overall adjustment ability of students to see the relationship between adjustment and belonging to a Greek organization. The authors’ purpose is to determine whether Greek life is helpful or detrimental to adjustment (ie well or poor) in college students over a scope of situations. The audience is either heads of universities determining whether to allow Greek life on particular campuses, or those (or the parents of those) already enrolled in Greek systems.

1. Transitioning from E1 What did you want to find out after having written your E1? What ideas and questions did you have?
My first instinct was to find out more about the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority, but with such limited resources on the first essay, I thought that finding even more information on the chapter would be very unlikely. I then decided to move into a broader outlook at research sororities in general. What is it that makes their history so important to them? How do they use the building blocks of their history to improve themselves in today’s Greek culture? Has the very casual atmosphere of the Greek system today stemmed from the loss of many chapters’ individual histories and therefore their values?

2. Searching for books How was your search for books? What keywords did you use and how easy/difficult was the search? List one or two Library of Congress Subjects that you didn’t know existed. What were the Library of Congress subjects for the books you found? List the subjects, no need to separate or discern which books they derived from.
Looking for books was easy once I found the right keywords to use. At first I tried Greek culture, Greek organization, Greek letters, and only found books dealing with Greek antiquity. However, once I search with the keyword sorority, I found a great amount of books that seemed to relate to my topic. I did not know that Greek letter societies was a Library of Congress Subject, and that made up the majority of what my books were categorized as, as well as college students- attitudes, alcoholism- psychological aspects, college students- alcohol use, drinking of alcoholic beverages, and drinking behavior.

3. Searching for articles How was your search for articles: time consuming, quick, frustrating, what adjectives would you use to describe it and why? Which databases did you use (1-3)? What keywords/phrases (3-5) did you begin with? What keywords/descriptors are assigned to the articles that you ended up with?
My journal articles were easy to find. I started with JSTOR because I know it to be a reliable database with full text copies of articles included. I searched first with Greek organizations, as before, and once journals unrelated to my topic came up once again, I tried sorority. With this keyword, I found six pertinent journals.

4. Topic narrowing/discovery Now that you have gone through the search process, what is your in-process topic for E2? What do you look forward to finding out as you read your articles and books? Your topic will continue to evolve as you read and think.
I look forward to finding what it is that bonds sororities and fraternities and how this bond makes up the brother or sisterhood and keeps it in tact throughout the years.
